My First Year Here
66How Did I Get Here?
I have been a stay-at-home mom since November, 2008. Up until then, my husband stayed home with our daughter and I worked. Then, out of the blue my husband was offered a job and decided to take it. It was my turn to stay home and I was truly excited about the prospect! I loved being home with my daughter. At the time she was in preschool but only in the afternoons. While she was in school I searched the Internet high and low for writing opportunities.
Some sites I founds seemed sort of scammy. There were a lot of sites for freelancers but that really wasn't what I was looking for. But what exactly was I looking for? I just wanted a place to write and maybe earn a bit of money in the process. But it also had to be a site that looked clean and professional. I was having a tough time finding the perfect ste.
In the spring, my search was interrupted by us moving. It was around May when my search continued and I finally found it! A place called HubPages. I knew right away it was something I wanted to try so I signed up. That was the easy part, the hard part was working up the nerve to actually write and publish an article.
I feel that one of my strengths is writing about personal experiences so that's exactly what I did. I had recently attended a Michael W. Smith/Steven Curtis Chapman concert. I combined that experience with my love for Christian music and just like that, my first hub was born.
My First Hub Ever
- How I went from Attending Rock and Country Concerts to Enjoying the Ultimate Worship Experience
Rock Concert One of my favorite forms of entertainment is attending concerts. My first-ever concert was New Kids on the Block in St. Paul, MN. For a fourteen year-old, it was the most amazing experience of my...
What to Write Next?
After I published my first hub, my mind was whirling. What else could I write about? In what areas did I feel I had some expertise? I began to make a list of possible hubs. I would lie awake at night writing hubs in my head. For my second hub, I decided to write about something I knew well - having a special needs child.
- Coping with the News that Your Child has Special Needs
I remember very clearly the day our pediatrician told me and my husband about our daughter's disability. She had been born eleven weeks premature, and we knew she had suffered some brain damage during the...
It was this hub that I received my first comment from a sweet lady named Ellie Perry, who is no longer at HubPages. She wrote:
"I really enjoyed reading your hub ... diseminating this information is so important. People who have not experienced the blessing of a relationship with a disabled person may not be able to really understand the depth of exchange in such a relationship..."
I felt so encouraged by that comment. I was also encouraged by the fact that Ellie became my first fan. Others followed. I continued to write about things I cared about or things I had experienced. But I also read the hubs of others. I made comments, and followed other Hubbers.
I tried to learn techniques to increase my traffic such as backlinking which included posting my links on social networking sites such as Facebook and backlinking sites such as She Told Me. I tried to understand SEO, RSS, Adsense and incorporating Amazon into my hubs. There was so much to learn. And now a year later, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot and have made some wonderful friends along the way.
My Hub Stats

Promoting Other Hubbers
Whether it's giving advice or trying to promote one another's hubs, Hubbers are always willing to lend a helping hand. The following are a few hubs on which I have been featured:
- Hubbers: We Are Our Stories
Life never comes with a ribbon wrapped around itif it did, that ribbon would likely be tattered to shreds by the time we hit our stride as adults. Disappointments, hurts, pain, heartaches, and brokenness... - Women Writers In HubPages Community
Greetings Viewer, The hub you came to is a Valentine's Day Dedication to the Women Writers of HubPages Community. I have taken the effort to present a unique experience for those who come across my hub. ...
I have also written my own hub to help promote and pay tribute to other Hubbers:
- A Tribute to My Favorite Hubbers
I hesitated about writing this hub. While I want to pay tribute to some of my favorite hubbers, I also don't want to leave anyone out. There are several hubbers I follow and I read their hubs on a regular...
And I even wrote a HubPages song:
- The Twelve Days of Hubbing
I joined HubPages seven months ago with the hopes that it would motivate me to start writing again and also to make a little extra money on the side. It has accomplished one of the two goals, it got me...

A Great First Year
All in all, my first year here has been an enjoyable learning experience. I find it amazing how I've gotten to know people all over the world from being a part of the HubPages online community. I have also learned so much from reading Hubs of the very knowledgeable Hubbers on this site.
Being a part of HubPages keeps me motivated to write. Through HubPages I can voice my beliefs and opinions about things I am passionate about including: being pro-life, having a relationship with Jesus, special needs children, congenital heart defects, conservative politics, the great state of North Dakota and Christian music.
Thanks HubPages, for a great first year!

A year already. I hope you are doing well.
Keep on hubbing!
HubPages is a valuable experience to be sure. I've been having a lot of fun with it since actually becoming active here. It took me a full year before I actually published the first hub as I was simply so used to writing on my blog, HP seemed like a foreign place to me. I'm glad I gave it another look since. :)
Cari,
You're another fine writer I come to know here at HP. I enjoy reading your quality hubs.
Congrats Cari - doesn't time fly. I enjoy reading your Hubs and hope you continue to enjoy not only writing but also the HP community. Best Wishes. :)
thank-you for that article and I have to agree being from California, and getting a comment from India just blew me away. I think that is really neat stuff!!!
I just got to know you and hate it wasn't sooner, I think we share some feelings. This has been a great place for me too, right now I am after no money just using the practice and I make some enemies who defend criminals I would rather didn't know who or where I am, lol. It is great just running my mouth and opinions about anything I want, I was a very shy child but as I get older it is nice to say just absolutely what I want and to some maybe that seems unchristian when it comes to little children being used and abused and I know they will pay one day but today our judges need to wake up and maybe I spread myself a little thin concerned about so much but that is just me and I liked you, just give me a yell if you need defended, lol, hope you will stick around a long time!
Well done on your first year. I too consider HubPages to be a "great find" and appreciate not only the opportunity to write but the sense of community. Reading your hub has served to validate my decision to keep on hubbing and I look forward to celebrating my first year. Congratulations!
