Christian Self-Publishing Companies and Comparisons of their Most Popular Packages

By Cari Jean

There are many advantages for Christian authors to work with a Christian self-publishing company. One of the main advantages is that they know the distributors, bookstores, literary agents and publishers in the Christian market which enables them to get the Christian author's book to their target audience - other Christians.

Like other self-publishers, Christian self-publishing companies offer print-on-demand services, a nonexclusive contract, a 100% royalty rate, e-books and many other services provided by mainstream publishers. The only real difference is that they do not publish anything that contradicts or defames the Word of God.

With the increased numbers of Christian (and mainstream) self-publishers, authors no longer have to depend on the big publishing houses anymore. There is no longer the hassle of submitting manuscript after manuscript in the hopes of getting published. Authors can now be more independent, hence the phrase, "Indie authors." They can also have more control over the design, editing and marketing of their books. It is truly an exciting time for writers.

Following is a bit of information about some Christian self-publishing companies and comparisons of their most popular packages.

Christian Self-Publishing Companies

Xulon Press

Xulon Press is a subsidiary of Salem Communications and according to their website, they are the largest Christian self-publishing company of print-on-demand Christian books. They are also the first print-on-demand self-publisher for Christian authors. They "make Christian publishing fast, easy and affordable."

As a Christian self-publishing company, Xulon press does not publish books that degrade the gospel of Jesus Christ. They refuse to publish books having to do with the occult, pornography, homosexuality, New Age and other subjects condemned by Scripture.

Xulon press claims they can get your book into 71,000 bookstores in the world and on the Internet. They can produce your book in 90 days.

Newbook Publishing

Newbook Publishing, a division of Reliance Media, has been a Christian book publisher for over 40 years. Their slogan is "Making book publishing simple and profitable."

Newbook Publishing will not publish a book that contradicts the Bible or contains profanity and/or explicit content. Their core values include integrity, hard work, deadline adherence, marketing savvy, creativity, clear vision and traditional Christian values.

They claim they will get you the lowest book publishing price and the highest royalties with no hidden fees.

Innovo Publishing

Innovo Publishing is a conservative Christian-based, family-owned publishing company. Innovo says that when you join with them to publish your book, you are joining their family.

Innovo Publishing's primary purpose is to get the Gospel of Jesus out through publishing. They do not publish anything that defames or undermines the Bible.

With a rush order, they can get your book together in 45 days and market your book to their global network of 30,000 wholesalers and retailers.

Winepress Publishing

Winepress Publishing has been a Christian publisher since 1991. Their slogan is "Your Book, Defined."

Something unique about Winepress Publishing is their "no gossip" policy. Employees of the publishing company sign an agreement saying they will not talk negatively - in or out of the office - about an author with whom they are working. This policy is based on the scripture from Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Westbow Press

Westbow Press became a self-publishing imprint of Thomas Nelson Inc, a leading Christian publishing company in 2009. Their slogan is "Begin Your Legacy."

Westbow's standards include working with authors who have a Christian worldview, profess to have a relationship with Jesus, embrace the central truths of Christianity and who have biblical morals. Authors and their books who do not meet their editorial standards will not be published.

This is a very helpful hub for writing Christian books. I have thought about trying to do that in the future and your hub is very informative.

I am in the Tug of War hub contest for just this weekend. I don't know if you read my hub but it was about caring for an elderly parent in your home with a lot of need to know facts. If you are so inclined and have time I would appreciate your vote. As I think these voting sites are sometimes hard to find this is the link:

http://apps.facebook.com/offerpop/Participate.psp?

If you have already voted or don't want to that's fine as I surely don't want to pressure anyone. Thanks.

Thanks for all the information Cari Jean. I would just add that some publishers use the word Christian to draw hopefuls authors and one must be careful.

I love that Winepress has that great Ephesians 4:29 policy. That alone makes me want to publish with them!

Pamela - I know I have thought about it too which is why writing about Christian self-publishers was a good way to learn more. I will take a look at your hub and be sure to vote - congrats on being in the tug-of-war!

Hyphenbird - thanks so much for your comment. You're right, I think before getting into any publishing situation you have to be careful and make sure everything is legit. I thought that was cool too about Winepress's NO Gossip policy!

Hi Cari Jean, as a publisher myself, it's nice to know people are still making actual paper books still. The Kindles are looming on the horizon. Thanks for the great review. =:)

Winsome - thanks so much for your comment. I have downloaded a couple of e-books on my computer but it just doesn't feel right to read them that way. I suppose I will have to get with the times though!

NewBookPublishing 7 months ago

Thank you Cari for including NewBookPublishing on your list. I think you did a great job evaluating each company and I know this will be very helpful to many authors. The Lord gave NewBook's owner, Patrick McGuffin, a word many years ago to "take what is seen by the eyes of a few and let it be seen by many." With this in our hearts, it is our great honor to help publish the words God has given authors and help market it to thousands!

NewBookPublishing - thanks so much for your comment. What a wonderful word from the Lord that Mr. McGuffin received. I love that your company, along with the others listed, truly honor God by not publishing anything that contradicts His Word.
